Palantir focuses on creating the world’s best experience for working with data that empowers people to answer their most complex questions.

I had the opportunity to work on many different projects and verticals while at Palantir, some of which I can’t talk about, so I apologize in advance. In addition to the design work below, I also had a chance to manage a portion of the design team (a first for me) and be deeply involved in the hiring of designers and the design of the interview process.

Palantir Workspace

A web-based application for conducting network analysis, geospatial analysis, and document reading that attempts to unify the universe of Palantir products. Started as a design initiated project that would later become a full-fledged engineering project critical to the business.

Some of what you see below was created or influenced by folks I directly managed on this project, specifically Antoine Llorca, Greg Martin, and Eric Grossman.

Palantir Workspace Grid View

This is an example of an early iteration of the project view and all the contents of a project, specifically in a grid or icon-centric view.

The Problem

I initiated this project as an attempt to solve some of the challenges I saw in a project I was managing. One of those problems was the fact that the workspace we were designing needed to accommodate many different types of applications as well as current and future applications. We also needed to do this in a way that clearly communicated the relationship between the workspace and its applications, while also providing flexibility for the wide variety of users and verticals.

Palantir Workspace Table View

Another early example of the same project view, but with a table view that may be more suitable for different types of objects and users.

My Role and Process

Since I initiated this project, my role spanned many different activities. I was a researcher, interaction designer, visual designer, prototyper, and manager.

My process on this project started with identifying the problem, developing my opinion about the problem, a lot of whiteboarding and sketching with fellow colleagues, developing a prototype, testing, and of course, iterating.

Palantir Workspace Mini Grid View

This example illustrates how the workspace is always accessible when an application is open, such as a network graph application, and is visually and conceptually the foundational layer of the product.

Palantir Workspace Mini Reader View

Similar to the previous example, but this is showing the reading application open.

Palantir Workspace Drag and Drop Interaction

An example of a drag and drop interaction within the workspace.

Palantir Workspace Later Iteration

A later iteration of the workspace user interface, in this case the projects view.

Palantir Workspace Later Iteration

A later iteration of the object / file view of the workspace.

Palantir Workspace Later Iteration

A later iteration of the object / file view of the workspace while an object is currently opened.

How about some single shot examples?

Here are a few small visual examples of the many things that I touched while working at Palantir. Again, since we love to collaborate at Palantir, many of these were influenced by my excellent colleagues.

Code Editor

Code Editor — An interface for a web-based code editor for our Engineers. My role was user research, interaction design, and visual design.

Case Management

Case Management — An interface for Local Law Enforcement to manage and collaborate on their cases. My role was user research, interaction design, visual design, and some front-end development.

Login Screen

Mobile Sales Analytic Tool — A concept for the initial store screen that’s part of a mobile sales analytics tool. Check out the animated version on Dribbble.

Dashboard Inspector

Widget Inspector — Example popover for changing settings for a widget in our dashboard creation tool.
